California lists 6,400 bonded winery permits (35.3% of the 18,120 U.S. winery class), ahead of Washington (1,430). Winery permits authorize production or blending under a federal bond; this page counts premises, not case volume.
Wineries are the largest production class in the TTB registry (18,120 of 84,273 total federal permits). A state that leads wineries but trails on total permits usually has a production-heavy mix rather than import or wholesale volume.
These counts reflect active FAA Basic Permits in the TTB List of Permittees for the winery class only. A permit means the holder has met federal eligibility for that class; it does not indicate production volume, revenue, market share, or whether the business is currently operating. Breweries are out of scope (Brewer's Notice under IRC §6103 is not in this public registry). This ranking is by absolute count and is not population-adjusted. Registry voice only, not consumption, retail, or opening-advice guidance.
